Nerja
You will feel right at home in the town of Nerja (20,000
inhabitants). The picturesque spot is situated about
50 kilometres (31 miles) from Málaga on Spain's
southern coast, which is not called the "Costa
del Sol" for nothing. Nerja boasts about 3,500
hours of sunlight annually. Year round, temperatures
range from 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit)
in the summer and 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit)
in the winter, making for a very pleasant climate.
Surrounded by the Sierra Almijarra Mountains as well
as 16 kilometres (10 miles) of sandy beaches, Nerja
entices many visitors, but has luckily remained undiscovered
by mass tourism. A highlight of the location is the
"Cuevas de Nerja," the prehistoric stalactite
caves dating from the Stone Age. And there are other
remnants of the over 30,000-year-old settlement
in Nerja. Today, the Andalusian style dominates not
only the houses, but the traditions of the city as well.
Inhabitants and visitors happily celebrate Carnival,
Easter, and other traditional holidays together.
