Excursions - Mexico

Tulúm

Tulúm is the most visited Mayan site in the world. The pyramid of Tulúm is not really the highlight of Mayan architecture, but impresses rather by the fact that it is situated right on the Caribbean Sea.

The main temple „El Castillo“ stands right on the highest point of the cliff overlooking the Caribbean. Tulúm used to be a big trading and religious center of the Mayan culture and, above all, an important Mayan seaport. It is one of the major cultural monuments of Mexico.

Chichén Itzá

Chichén Itzá ist the most famous and popular archeological site of the Yucatán peninsula and, together with Tulúm, the most visited Mayan site in Mexico. If one wants to explore the entire archeological complex of Chichén Itzá, one can easily spend the whole day there. Moreover, there is a Light & Sound show held every evening, which is already included in the entrance fee. The show comprises a historical sound play accompanied by matching background music, and at the same time all pyramids are brightly illuminated by colourful spotlights.

Cobá

For years, the pyramids of Cobá used to be an insider’s tip, but by now rumour has spread that the mysterious Mayan site surrounded by dense rainforest is well worth a visit. Cobá is the largest Mayan site, covering an area of nearly 70 qkm.

The majority of the ruins are yet to be excavated. But those that have already been cleared and restored are most definitely worth visiting, particularly the highest pyramid called Nohoch Mul (maya, „big mountain“).

The pyramid is 42 metres high. There are about 120 steps to climb till one reaches its top, but the panoramic view one gets is worth the effort!

Mérida

Mérida is the capital of the Mexican federal state of Yucatán. It was the first colonial city in Mexico from the direction of the Caribbean, offering a most diverse cultural program. Folklore performances take place every evening, accompanied by open air concerts, music and dance presentations.

During the weekends some streets are closed to traffic, so that the restaurants can put their tables there, offering additional seats to guests, where different bands play live music.

Hidden Worlds - Cenote Dos Ojos

Dos Ojos is part of the biggest underwater cave system in the world called Nohoch Nah Chich. It is an amazing experience to swim in its crystal clear waters, but for skin- and scuba divers, the cenote is an absolute paradise. The diving instructors would say, ‚He who has not dived in Dos Ojos, has not dived in Mexico!‘
